MON, FEB 24 2020-theG&BJournal- President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the constitution of a National Humanitarian Coordination Committee (NHCC) to oversee all humanitarian activities in the country.
The Committee is the outcome of an international workshop on improving civil-security cooperation in humanitarian interventions in the North East convened in November 2019 by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (FMHDS) in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Some of the issues agreed on at the meeting include the establishment of a fora at both National and State levels to coordinate humanitarian activities in the North East and to safeguard the seamless delivery of humanitarian aid as well as guarantee the safety and security of humanitarian actors in line with the agreements reached during at the Review and Civil Security Cooperation (CiSEC) Framework for Humanitarian Interventions.
According to the Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity) Femi Adesina the new Committee will among others, provide a national vision for humanitarian actions, advise on coordination between the security services and humanitarian actors, settle disputes that may arise from interactions between security services and the humanitarian community.
The NHCC will be chaired by the Minister Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (Sadiya Umar Farouq), and National Security Adviser (NSA), as co-chair.
