President Buhari affirms rights of Nigerians to peaceful protest amid end SARS campaign, assures of comprehensive Police reform

SAT, OCT 10 2020-theG&BJournal-President Muhmmadu Buhari, during a late evening meeting Friday with the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the Inspector General of Police Mohammed A. Adamu, endorsed the rights of Nigerians to peaceful protest and assured of a comprehensive Police reform amid weeks of nationwide protest against Police Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), over allegations of harassment, extortion and kidnapping.
‘’Our determination to reform the police should never be in doubt,’’ the President said, adding that he is ‘’being briefed regularly on the reform efforts ongoing to end police brutality and unethical conduct, and ensure that the Police are fully accountable to the people.’’
The President said the IG already has his firm instructions to conclusively address the concerns of Nigerians regarding the excesses that gave rise to the nationwide protest and the resultant calls for the termination of SARS operations. He implored the IGP to ensure that erring personal of the Police Force are brought to justice while appealing for calm.
While the President appealed for patience and calm, he emphasised the rights of Nigerians to freely exercise their rights to peacefully make their views known.
He equally reminded Nigerians that the vast majority of men and women of the Nigerian Police Force are patriotic and committed to protecting the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians, ‘’and we would continue to support them to do their job,’’ the President said.
