FRI, MARCH 06 2020-theG&BJournal-The ban stays until further notice. But team officials will still participate in the pre-match walk-outs.
The Premier League issued a statement on the ban Thursday saying; ‘’the Premier League fair-play handshake will not take place between players and match officials from this weekend until further notice based on medical advice.”
The Premier League noted that coronavirus is spread via droplets from nose and mouth and can be transmitted on the hands and passed on via handshake.
‘’Club and match officials will still perform the rest of the traditional walk-out protocol ahead of each fixture. On entering the field of play, the two teams will continue to line up, accompanied by the Premier League music, then players from the home team will walk pat their opposition without shaking hands.’’
The Premier League has already dropped a hint that football matches may be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus outbreak. Teams were earlier in the week written letters to outline the new contingency plans put in place to deal with the spread of the disease.
If that is enforced, football clubs are certain to suffer devastating hit on their revenues with losses running into several millions of pounds.
