WED, JULY 19 2023-theGBJournal |Nigeria’s biggest opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday poured vituperation on the ruling All Progressives Congress Party (APC) over Tuesday’s sudden hike in petrol pump price.
The PDP, in a statement issued Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba describes as ”extortionate and provocative” following the jump of price from N534 to N617 per litre.
According to the Party, the present dire situation comes as a consequence of APC’s insensitivity, seething corruption, scandalous cluelessness and lack of capacity to effectively steady and manage the nation’s economy.
PDP in the statement insisted that the price of petrol at N617 per litre is excessive, unacceptable and cannot be justified under any guise, adding that the removal of subsidy on petroleum products with comparative advantage and expanded value chain in refining capacity should make fuel come down to N150 per litre in the country.
”This is especially given the economic potential and prospect within our country,” the Party said.
According to the PDP, ”it is appalling that instead of seeking ways to stabilize and grow the economy, the APC administration has abandoned the welfare of Nigerians which is the primary purpose of government under section 14(2)(b) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as Amended) and left the citizens to the vagaries of market forces and exploitative cabal; a disposition that is characteristics of a government that is not accountable.”
The opposition party, in reference to the subsidy removal, said its alarmed by APC’s ill-thought out, badly planned and hurriedly-executed policies. The Party took a swipe also at the value of the local currency and economy which it says the APC has run aground.
”Businesses and production are shutting down, citizens are losing their means of livelihood, commercial and social activities crippled, with millions of families no longer able to afford their daily needs as the cost of food, medication and other essential goods and services continue to skyrocket.”
