WED JULY 31 2024-theGBJournal|Nigeria’s Super Falcon suffered their third defeat at the Olympic Game in Paris (Paris2024), leaving them winless, and out of the competition.
The Super Falcons was making the first appearances in the Olympics Game after a sixteen year absence. It again, ended in a soar note, losing 3-1 to Japan in their final group stage match at the Beaujouire Stadium in Nantes.
Japan lead 2-1 before break. The tally was reduced after a great strike by Jennifer Echegini in the 42nd minute of the game.
Japan’s first goal came in the 1oth minute, and 12 minutes later they added a second to take a decisive lead.
The Super Falcons, in one of the toughest groups, was beaten 0-1 by Brazil in their first game and lost again by same margin to Spain in the second game.
Spain topped the group with 9 points having won all their three matches. Japan came second with six points. Brazil with one game won, was in third place.
It is Nigeria’s worst outing in tournament football for a while now having won accolades for their performance at the last FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand in 2023.
