WED JULY 31 2024-theGBJournal|One of Nigeria’s greatest singer/songwriter as well as music performer and broadcaster, Onyeka Onwuenu has died. She was 70 years.
She died Tuesday at a medical facility in Lagos where she was rushed to after she collapsed during her performance at prominent banker’s birthday party.
The immediate cause of her collapse and sudden death is yet to be determined, but reports say she was admitted in the ICU unit of the hospital before she passed on.
Onyeka was everything to the performing art industry in Nigeria-actress, human rights activist, journalist-dubbed the ”Elegant Stallion,” and won numerous career awards and nominations including nominations for African Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in Leading Role as well as for African Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in Supporting Role.
One of her greatest hit albums, ‘Dancing in the Sun”, released in 1988, thrust her into global limelight, a song dedicated to Winnie Mandela, South Africa’s renowned activist and wife of the Icon, Nelson Mandela.
She had also served thrice as one of the judges on X Factor Nigeria.
Born in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria. Her parents hails from Arondizuogu in Ideato North, Imo State. She was once the chairperson of the Imo State Council of Arts and Culture.
In 2023 she was appointed the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
She is survived by two children.
