SAT MAY 24 2025-theGBJournal| The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) today announced it intends to shutdown the Port Harcourt Refinery (PHRC) for another dose of multi-billion maintenance exercise.
”This scheduled maintenance and sustainability assessment will commence on May 24, 2025,” the NNPC said in a statement.
NNPC Limited management say they are working closely with all relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), to ensure that the maintenance and assessment activities are carried out efficiently and transparently.
”NNPC Ltd. remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering sustainable energy security for Nigeria,” the NNPC said in the statement signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye.
It adds that further updates will be provided regularly through our official channels.
The latest shutdown does indeed reflect the long standing challenges the federal government faced in effort to revamp the 60-year old refinery.
It also underscores the opaque reporting on its operational status by the state-owned NNPC, as seen recently when the NNPC announced the refinery has been cured of its ills and went on a multi-million naira campaign to announce resumption of operations at the refinery.
Recall that the refinery partially resumed petrol loading in December, 2024 after over 24 months of multiple shutdowns and operational interruptions.
The euphoria that trailed the resumption of operations was short-lived as the lifting of (PMS) abruptly stopped signaling that the refinery has stopped functioning again.
