The summit will run from Saturday 8-10 February 2020 under the theme: Silencing the Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development.
The AU Summit also features several side events. A high level meeting on Africa’s Blue Economy: A Continental Strategy for Joint Action is scheduled to hold today. The meeting will be attended by HE Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson African Union Commission, HE Erna Solberg, Prime Minister of Norway, HE Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, HE Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General, Members of the High Level Panel on Sustainable Ocean economy, Key partners on blue economy, the private sector and Association in Maritime, Women, and Media.
The development of a sustainable blue economy is of strategic importance to implementation of Agenda 2063 flagship projects such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) that aims to accelerate intra-African trade and strengthen Africa’s common voice and trading position in the global market place.
AfCFTA will be operational on July 1 2020. 29 ratifications have already been deposited.
The AU said it will be focusing on conflict prevention and building capacities of Member States, RECs/RMs to rapidly transit from early warning action and on robustly addressing illicit financial flows and the proliferation of arms.
