MON, MARCH 09 2020-theG&BJournal-The Minister of Power Engr Sale Mamman alongside Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to the President, Muhammadu Buhari held crucial talks Monday with top officials of Siemens Energy in Munich, Germany on Nigeria energy plans.
Both parties recently signed a six year deal which will see Siemens help Nigeria reach effective electricity generation, transmission and distribution of at least 25, 000 megawatts by the year 2025.
The Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, Yusuf Tuggar was in the team that met the Siemens officials.
It is unclear the reasons the for the visit but it is not unconnected to the agreement signed in July 2019 by the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) on behalf of the federal government with Siemens- a result of President Buhari’s state visit to Germany in August 2018 to meet with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The agreement is for Siemens to push for 7,000 megawatts of reliable power supply by 2021 and 11,000 megawatts by 2023 in phases 1 and 2 respectively. The third and final phase is to target generation and grid capacity of 25,000 megawatts.
As of Monday, 9 March 2020, Nigeria can only muster 3,470.81 megawatts of electricity nationwide, a reflection of the country’s electricity sector crisis.
