FRI, 18 SEPT 2020-theGBJournal-The Nigerian Police Bill, 2020 signed into law Wednesday by President Muhammadu Buhari cleared the way for the establishment of an appropriate funding framework for the police in line with what is obtainable in other Federal Government key institutions.
The Bill is the latest in the strings of Funding Bills signed into law by the President since assumption of office, to address professionalism and enhance the training opportunities.
On June 24, 2019 the Nigerian Police Trust Fund came into being after it was signed into law by the President. The Fund is to provide funds for training and welfare of personnel of the Nigerian Police Force. The Trust Fund which is intended to be operational for six years, except extended by Act of the National Assembly, will also be used to procure security equipment and facilities to aid their functioning.
The new 2020 Bill, which effectively repeals the Police Act Cap P19 of 2004, provides for more effective and ‘’well organised Police Force, driven by the principles of transparency and accountability in its operations and management of resources,’’ says the Presidency.
The Bill is also intended to create an enduring cooperation and partnership between the Police Force and communities in maintaining peace and combating crimes nationwide.
