FRI JULY 12 2024-theGBJournal| The Nigerian Governors Forum has thrown its weight behind Thursday’s ruling of Nigeria’s Supreme Court affirming the constitutional rights of local governments as regards financial autonomy and other salient principles.

The Forum however said, they still have to review the decision to come up with a resolution on the matter.

The Chairman of the Forum, Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman AbdulRasaq, addressing newsmen today said, the ruling reduces pressure of managing the Local Government Areas on them, adding that compliant with the ruling is a given.

”Governors are happy with the devolution of power with respect to local government autonomy. It relieves the burden on Governors and people don’t really know how much States expends in bailing out local governments,” he said.

He said the development is not going to affect the States, adding that they, the Governors, have never tampered with local government funds.

He advised the local governments to ”manage themselves, especially with the upcoming minimum wage, to manage their affairs and make sure that salaries are paid and traditional rulers get their 5%. Those are the main issues.”

He said the Forum will meet next week Wednesday to look at the issue wholly and come up with a resolution on it.
