TUE NOV 25 2025-theGBJournal| The Federal Government has launched the Stay Afloat – Flood Preparedness Fundraising Initiative, a major national programme led by NiHSA in partnership with the Global Flood Disaster Management Project (GFDMP).
Formally launched on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the initiative marks a decisive step in strengthening Nigeria’s flood preparedness, early-warning capacity, and community resilience.
NiHSA DG Umar Ibrahim Mohammed described it as a historic turning point, noting that the project’s nine priority interventions could reduce flood casualties by 80% and economic losses by 60%.
The Chairman, House Committee on Hydrological Development, Paschal Agbodike, highlighted annual flood losses of N2.6 trillion, recalling the 2022 disaster that affected 4.4 million Nigerians.
Ambassador Godknows Igali called for better land-use practices, river dredging, and stronger public–private partnerships.
The President reaffirmed full government support, stating: “Let this launch mark a new era—where we confront floods with preparedness, resilience, and collective action.”
