Nigerian equities market closes 1.57% w/w higher driven by bellwether stocks

…The NASD OTC Security Index (NSI) gained 0.92% Friday, extending its positive weekly positive performance with 0.37% w/w and closing at 3,351.2 points.

SAT JUNE 28 2025-theGBJournal|The NGX market capitalization hit N75.962 trillion by close of trading on Friday despite profit-taking in outperformers and sustained bargain hunting in undervalued stocks.

The benchmark market NGX All-Share Index also popped 1.57% to close the week at 119,995.76.

All other indices finished higher with the exception of NGX Oil and Gas Index,
which depreciated by 2.23%.

The performance was driven by gains in bellwether stocks such as ZENITHBANK (+16.23% w/w), BUACEMENT (+8.53% w/w), MTNN (+0.45% w/w), and TRANSCORP (+2.77% w/w) which offset notable decline in BUAFOODS (-6.46% w/w), GTCO (-2.88% w/w), OANDO (-7.38% w/w), ARADEL (-4.15% w/w).

However, the market traded bearish Friday for the second consecutive session, as the ASI sheds 0.64%.

This was spurred by selloffs in BUACEMENT (-9.92%), OANDO (-8.72%), GTCO (-0.60%), TRANSCORP (-0.10%) outweighing gains in DANGSUGAR (+1.38%), NB (+0.34%), AIICO (+0.63%), CADBURY (+0.61%), pushing the market to a negative close.

As a result, the year-to-date (YTD) return on the ASI increased to 16.58%, up from 14.78% the previous week, while market capitalization rose by 21.03%, compared to 18.75% earlier.

Market activities on Friday showed that trade turnover settled lower relative to the previous session declining by 29.92% and 29.87% across the volume and value of transaction, respectively.

A total of 625.78 million valued at N12.78bn were exchanged in 21,800 deals. JAPAULGOLD (+6.64%) led the volume chart with 88.26mn units traded, while ZENITHBANK (-0.51%) led the value chart with N1.76 billion.

Market breadth closed negative with 0.84-to-1 ratio, with losers outnumbering gainers in the market. NEIMETH (+10.0%) topped the twenty-seven (27) gainers, while LEGENDINT (-9.98%) led thirty-two (32) losers and the rest of stocks on the exchange closed flat.

Sector performance for the week was mostly bullish, led by the NGX Banking Index gaining (+6.26% w/w), followed by the NGX Insurance Index (+6.13% w/w), and the NGX Consumer Goods (+5.98% w/w).

However, sentiment in Friday’s session indicates only the NGX Consumer Goods closed positive (+0.17%), while other major sectors traded bearish.

Market capitalisation mirrored this trend, increasing to N1.96 trillion.

Trading activity was mixed in today’s session. The volume traded declined by 25.71% to 221,449 units, while the total value of transactions increased by 13.81% to N8.68 million.

A total of 28 deals were recorded during the session.
