Nigeria ranks 49th in global coronavirus pandemic response index

THUR 28 JAN, 2021-theGBJournal- Australian think tank, the Lowy Institute claims Nigeria ranks 49th in global COVID Performance Index.

Rwanda sat way up among the top 10 performing countries in 6th place while Kenya sits at 47th position above Nigeria. The Think tank claims countries like Togo (19), Tunisia (21) Zambia (30), Malawi (27) DRC (39), Cote de’ Ivoire (34), Zimbabwe (38), Ghana (41) and Senegal (36) outperformed Nigeria.

The Lowy Institute judged 98 countries on how they managed the coronovirus pandemic from the week that followed every country’s hundredth confirmed case of COVID-19 over a period of 36 weeks, using data available to January 9, 2021.

Brazil, with over 200, 000 fatalities to date was ranked as the world’s weakest handler of the pandemic at 98 while Mexico, Colombia, Iran and the United State ranked 97, 96, 95 and 94th as the worst countries in terms of how they handled the outbreak of the disease.

New Zealand was ranked as the world’s most effective handler of the pandemic. The country has recorded just 25 deaths and 2, 295 cases. Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand and Cyrus are in the top 5 bracket Iceland ranks below Rwanda in 6th place followed by Austrilia, Latvia and Sri Lank rounding up the top 10 places.

The report findings showed that factors such political system, how advanced an economy is or population size made any discernable difference in country’s performance.

Health expats reached by theGBJournal say they couldn’t comment because they haven’t seen the report but one expressed cynicism on the report findings.

Coronavirus fatalities in Nigeria rank among the lowest the in world with a total of 1,544 deaths since the outbreak of the infection in late 2019. Total confirmed cases is 126, 160 while 100, 365 patients have so far been discharged.
