FRI, AUGUST 04 2023-theGBJournal |The Nigeria Customs Service has unveiled a new innovative measure towards simplifying trade in Nigeria.

The new measure will enable fast-tracking of ‘compliant traders’ in line with the World Customs Organization protocol.

The project, which is called ‘Authorised Economic Operators’ (AEO), has the protection of the new Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and is designed to systematically identify tolerable risks affecting the importation of legitimate goods into Nigeria.

During the presentation of the modalities of implementation at Customs Headquarters Abuja, the Ag. Comptroller-General of Customs, (CG) Adewale Adeniyi MFR, re-echoed his commitment to tackling challenges bedeviling trade facilitation in Nigeria.

The CG, said that compliant traders and businesses of significant benefits will benefit from the innovation, assuring that it will be a game-changer in the realm of trade facilitation.

It is also believed that AEO Project will contribute to ease of doing business across various sectors and attract investors into the Country.

The process, which is expected to improve security and efficiency in fast-tracking goods, will reduce turnaround time for importers and double chances of generating revenue, which according to CGC, will strengthen the mutual recognition between the Service and stakeholders.

Some of the benefits that AEO brings are reducing examination and priority examination, amongst others.

Meanwhile, The Nigeria Customs Service, Apapa Area Command, has collected a total of N540,431,401,641 as revenue from January to July 2023.

The Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, Mohammed Auwal, disclosed this at a farewell session with senior officers of the command and also sued for compliance as the bedrock of port efficiency.

ACG Mohammed, who until Friday, July 28, 2023, was Customs Area Controller of Apapa Command, lauded the revenue collection as an outcome of leakage prevention, zero compromise for duty evasion and due diligence in the face of reduced trade volume.
