MON, 29 AUG, 2022-theGBJournal| The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Transport Fare Watch for July 2022 underscores commuters agony, and highlights the impact of insecurity and aviation fuel scarcity on the Nigeria’s transport sector.
The report- which covers air, land and water journey- also shows that Nigerian commuters spending will not relent soon.
While the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey, increased by 8.43% on a month-on-month from N56,082.64 in June 2022 to N60,811.75 in July 2022. On a year -on-year, the fare rose by 65.34% from 36,779.73 in July 2021.
Also, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop, increased by 3.46% on a month-on-month from N582.61 in June 2022 to N602.77 in July 2022. In terms of year-on-year, however, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop rose by 44.76% from N416.38 in July 2021 to N602.77 in July 2022.
In another category, the NBS report shows the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity per drop rose to N3,758.46 in July 2022 indicating an increase of 2.61% on a month-on-month compared to the value of N3,662.87 in June 2022. On a year -on-year, the fare prices rose by 47.85% from N2,542.02 in July 2021.
While the average fare paid for water transport (waterway passenger transportation) in July 2022 increased to N965.82 showing a growth of 2.39% on a month-on-month from N943.26 in June 2022. On year-on-year, the fare rose by 15.56% from N835.77 to N965.82 in July 2022.
At the state level the bus journey within the city (per drop constant route), Zamfara recorded the highest with N812.50 followed by Taraba State with N800.00. On the other hand, Rivers State recorded the least fares with N466.67 followed by Borno with N455.00.
For intercity bus travel (state route charged per person fare) in July 2022, the highest fare was recorded in Abuja with N5,950.0 followed by Adamawa with N5,175.00. The least fares were recorded in Kwara with N1,687.5 followed by Bayelsa with N2,328.57. Taraba recorded the highest air transport charges (for specified routes single journey) with N70,000.00 in July 2022, followed by Abuja with N68,650.00. Conversely, Plateau, Ondo, Nasarawa, Kano and Borno recorded the least fare with N55,000.00.
In July 2022, Kwara state had the highest motorcycle transport fare with N 718.89 followed by Lagos with N655.88. The least fare was recorded in Edo with N171.81 followed by Bayelsa with N175.00.
Similarly, water transport fare was highest in Delta state with N3,250.00, followed by Rivers with N2900.00 while the least fare was recorded in Borno State with N345.50 followed by kebbi with N410.00.
Distribution of transport fare categories by zones shows that South-West recorded the highest fare of air transport in July 2022 with N62,500.00 followed by and North-West with N61,071.43 while South-South had the least with N59,754.73. In terms of bus journey intercity, the South-West had the highest fare with N4,075.77 followed by and North-East with N3,890.12 while the North-West recorded the least with N3,582.75.
In July 2022, transport fare of bus journey within the city recorded the highest in the North-East with N648.06 followed by North-West with N620.89 while the South-West recorded the least with N570.00.
Also, commuters on motorcycle (Okada) paid the highest fare in the North-Central with N490.63 followed by North-East with N468.53 while the North-West recorded the least with N335.29. South-South zone had the highest charges paid on water transport with N2,253.03 followed by North-Central with N740.93, while North-East had the least fare with N611.20.
