MON 08 FEB, 2021-theGBJournal- Nigerian has been allocated 41 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccines, the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 (PTF) officials said during the task force media briefing Monday.
The allocation include vaccines from the three major vaccine candidates recently acknowledged to be effective against the deadly coronavirus, the Astra Zeneca, Pfizer Biontech and Johnson and Johnson vaccines.
Giving a breakdown of the allocation, the PTF said part of it is 7.6 million doses of the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine, 15.3 million doses of the Astra Zeneca vaccine and 18.4 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine.
‘’That gives Nigeria options of vaccines if that becomes necessary,’’ the PTF said.
According to the PTF, the vaccines will begin to arrive the country later this month and will be administered free of charge Nigerians.
The PTF explained the delay in the vaccine arrival to the country. It said Nigeria was actually considered as one of the countries that is ready to receive the Pfizer vaccine but because of the distribution intended to achieve public health value, it was not practical to provide every country with the Pfizer vaccine due to its limited quantity.
‘’This necessitated further review to narrow down the selection process. This information was disclosed to us by the country representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO),’’ the PTF said.
