WED, AUGUST 09 2023-theGBJournal |The Niger military junta Tuesday failed to honour a scheduled meeting with the ECOWAS-AU-UN Mission working to restore democratic normalcy to the country.
The Mission said in a statement that the mission was aborted following a late-night communication from the military authorities in Niger indicating their unavailability to receive the tripartite delegation.
The planned mission was part of the continued efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the current crisis in Niger.
The Commission said it will however, continue to deploy all measures in order to restore constitutional order in Niger.
In another development the ECOWAS slapped financial sanctions on associates of the Niger military rulers as the deadline set for military passed without action.
The coup leaders had been given until last Sunday to restore President Mohamed Bazoum to power or face forceful ejection.
The ECOWAS Leadership resolved to impose the sanctions on individuals and entities believed to be supporting the military junta in the Francophone country.
Meanwhile, Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale said Tuesday that ECOWAS has not ruled out military intervention, but believes that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other ECOWAS Leaders are in favour of diplomacy.
