THUR JUNE 12 2025-theGBJournal| Niger State Governor, farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago has solicited continued support of the World Bank and other International Organisations and donor Agencies to assist in rebuilding Mokwa town following the devastating flood that ravaged the community
The Governor made the call when he received a delegation from the World Bank and United Nations Development Program UNDP on a condolence visit at the Niger State Liaison Office Abuja.
Farmer Umaru Bago said, Mokwa needs urgent attention and immediate support to communities largely affected saying, the State Government in response to the federal Government’s assistance have provided 200 hectares of land to provide sites and services so that community members can be relocated in earnest.
He reiterated that alot of resources have been lost in the area and remains hopeful that the relationship and partnership between the State Government and the World Bank will eventually bring succour to the affected people.
Farmer Umaru Bago while appreciating the World Bank and the United Nations for their continuous support urged World Bank to expedite action on the $10m gully erosion site in Mokwa as the State Government has already set aside ten billion naira counterpart fund.
The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria , Mohammed Malick Fall while commiserating with the Governor over the Mokwa incident said many UN Agencies have been on ground in Mokwa rendering assistance to the victims while also reassuring him that the United Nations will continue to support the Government in it’s recovery process
World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Tamir Samad described the Mokwa incident as a tragedy adding that, Niger State is one of the active States in World Bank programs and disclosed that the World Bank will re assess the situation in Mokwa and see how to offer medium term solutions in watershed management, school rehabilitation among others.
Meanwhile, the management of Zenith Bank of Nigeria has donated N300 million to the victims of the Mokwa flood incident.
Zenith Bank made the donation through its Executive Director Louis Odom when he led management delegation of the Bank on a condolence visit to the farmer Governor at the Niger State Liaison Office Abuja.
Mr. Odom who described the event as unfortunate commiserated with the governor and entire people of Niger State saying, the donation made was to cushion the effects of the disaster and offer relief to victims.
He said, Zenith Bank is aware that the State will embark on massive reconstruction that will require huge sums of money and as such, the Bank felt the need to support the State as one of its partners.
He also prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and expressed hope that the State will overcome the incident.
Farmer Governor Umaru Bago was appreciative of Zenith Bank for the donation and thanked them for its partnership in supporting the new Niger agenda.
He also acknowledged them for being worthy partners in terms of need and friendship and added that, the financial institution’s foot prints is evident in Niger State as they have been engaging in corporate social responsibility, human and institutional capital development.
The Governor promised that the State remains committed to partnering with Zenith Bank especially in the areas of agriculture, health, education and other sectors.
