Sen. David Umaru (APC-Niger East) on Monday called for more investment in the education sector of the state.
Umaru made the call while giving an account of his stewardship in the last one year at his constituency office in Minna.
He said more investment in the sector would complement various effort by stakeholders toward having highly professional and responsive citizens.
“I have discovered that the education sector is in a very deplorable condition.
“I feel sad and wonder what our future will be like if government does not put a lot of efforts in this regard.
“There are schools in a lot areas I have visited that have no teachers on ground; they have not been going to school for the past 10 years.
“The building is there but there are no teachers and these places are mostly in the hinterland,” he added.
The senator said that he had sponsored over 600 students to write the JAMB-organised CBT and National Common Entrance Examination as part of efforts to promote learning in his senatorial district.
Umaru also said that more than 600 women across his district had been empowered to set up small scale businesses.
He said that he had also embarked on special intervention programmes in other critical areas.
