TUE. 10 JANUARY, 2023-theGBJournal| The governors of Niger Delta region is at the center of a terse statement today by the Niger Delta Congress (NDC) as condemnation pours in after a terror attack and kidnapping on a train station in Igueben, Edo State.

The NDC demanded that the region’s governors act to put in place mechanisms to help protect the lives and properties of Niger Deltans, saying that they are alarmed by the fact that ”despite numerous calls from the NDC and other well meaning groups and individuals from the region, the governors of the region are yet to establish a regional security outfit as proof of their commitment to securing the lives and properties of our people.”

”The frequency of these attacks call for serious concern,” the NDC said.

The NDC said in the statement signed by its National spokesperson, Mudiaga Ogboru, that ”this reluctance to take action despite persistent outcry, and in the midst of credible reports of unfamiliar armed persons lurking in our forest reserves, whose activities are mostly reported to be hostile, is becoming untenable and unacceptable.”

In the statement, the NDC recalled what it described as the ”styled terrorist attack”, that was successfully executed in Igueben on Saturday 7th January as well as similar ”unsuccessful” attempt at the Abraka train station in Delta State on 8th July 2022 by ”the same invasive terrorists masquerading as herdsmen.”

The NDC also noted the attacks on communities in Rivers, Bayelsa and Cross River State in the last months of 2022 which left scores dead and many others kidnapped.

The NDC strongly condemned the wanton attacks on the people of Niger Delta as ”one too many,” as it called on the state governors of the region to ”as a matter of urgency work towards ensuring the release of those kidnapped.
