SAT JULY 05 2025-theGBJournal| Nigerian stocks rose on Friday, with the NGX benchmark index hitting surprising new high and closing positive for the sixth consecutive week, despite sell-offs in the first two trading sessions of the week.
The NGX All-Share Index and Market Capitalization advanced 0.83% and 0.50% to
close the week at 120,989.66 and N76.339 trillion respectively.
Similarly, all other indices finished higher with the exception of NGX Premium and NGX
Industrial Goods Indices, which depreciated by 0.77% and 2.11% respectively
Buying interest in BUAFOODS (+2.23% w/w), TRANSCORP (+2.28% w/w), and WAPCO (+2.89% w/w) spurred the market performance despite declines in DANGCEM (-3.41% w/w), BUACEMENT (-3.04% w/w), and ZENITHBANK (-0.86% w/w), reflecting sustained investor interest in select bellwether stocks despite intermittent profit-taking.
Friday’s session closed positive, with the NGX All-Share Index (ASI) edging up by 0.01%, as price appreciation in GTCO (+0.54%), WAPCO (+0.54%), and INTBREW (+2.33%) offset declines in BUACEMENT (-0.96%), ZENITHBANK (-0.86%), and UBA (-0.68%).
As a result, the year-to-date (YTD) return expanded to 17.55%, up from 16.58% recorded in the previous week, reflecting sustained market resilience amid mixed sectoral performance.
Market activity, on Friday revealed a decline in trade turnover compared to the previous session, with transaction volume and value down 1.02% and 62.46%, respectively.
Investors exchanged a total of 923.86 million units valued at N11.0 billion across 25,680 deals.
JAPAULGOLD (-9.70%) topped the volume chart with 147.08 million units traded, while GTCO (+0.54%) led the value chart with transactions worth N1.54 billion.
Market breadth closed positive with a 1.44-to-1 ratio, as advancers outnumbered decliners.
Seventy-eight equities advanced in price during the week, same as seventy-eight
equities in the previous week while twenty equities depreciated in price, lower than
twenty-seven in the previous week.
Forty-nine equities remained unchanged, higher than forty-three recorded in the previous week.
Meanwhile, the NASD OTC Securities Index (NSI) advanced by 0.20% Friday, while on a weekly basis, it recorded a 1.79% w/w gain to close at 3,398.6 points.
Similarly, market capitalisation rose by the same margin, settling at N1.99 trillion.
Trading activity was mixed, as volume traded rose by 48.65% to 632,624 units, while the total transaction value declined by 21.06% to N18.06 million. A total of 25 deals were executed during the session.
