NGX All-Share Index falls as profit-taking returns, naira gives up gains against the U.S dollar

THUR JUNE 26 2025-theGBJournal| Bears fed on Nigerian stocks on Thursday, halting the benchmark index six-day winning streak. Profit-taking activities in BUAFOODS (-6.5%), NAHCO(-9.99%) and BUAFOODS(-6.46%) shares dragged the All-Share Index lower by 0.4% to 120,772.68 points.

This despite gains UNILEVER(+10.00%), BUACEMENT (+5.90%), and ZENITH (+0.52%).

Market capitalization also was dragged down by 0.4% to N76.45 trillion from N76.76 trillion.

The month-to-date and year-to-date returns moderated to +8.1% and +17.4%, respectively.

The total volume of trades increased by 3.6% to 892.97 million units, valued at N18.23 billion, and exchanged in 25,375 deals.

ELLAHLAKES was the most traded stock by volume at 113.50 million units, while ZENITHBANK was the most traded stock by value at N3.47 billion.

Sectoral performance was mixed as the Consumer Goods (-1.4%), Oil & Gas (-1.3%) and Banking (-0.6%) indices closed lower, while the Industrial Goods (+2.1%) and Insurance (+1.1%) indices advanced.

As measured by market breadth, market sentiment was negative (0.8x), as 37 tickers lost relative to 31 gainers.

THOMASWY (-10.0%) and NAHCO (-10.0%) posted the most significant losses of the day, while UNILEVER (+10.0%) and NEIMETH (+9.9%) led the gainers.

The NASD OTC market rebounded with the NASD Securities Index (NSI) and Market capitalisation advancing by 0.38% to 3,320.8 points and N1.94 trillion respectively.

Trading activity dipped as the volume traded dipped by 83.41% to 298,142 units, and value of transactions declined by 14.87% to N7.62 million.

Number of trades also witnessed a bearish momentum by losing 24.32% to 28 deals, suggesting that few trades drove the rebound.

Meanwhile, at the official Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market, the naira exchange rate to the U.S dollar fell 0.6% to N1,549.00/US$.
