ABUJA, AUGUST 18, 2016 – The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) will hold its 2016 Second Anniversary Annual Lecture on Aug. 24, at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. The Director-General of the Commission, Malam Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

According to kawu, the theme for this year’s edition of the lecture series is; “Broadcasting, Democracy and the Challenge of the New Nigeria’’.

He said that the lecture would be delivered by Prof. Attahiru Jega, immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“On Aug. 24, 1992, an Act establishing the NBC was signed into law heralding the deregulation of the broadcasting industry in Nigeria.

“To mark the Anniversary, the commission last year instituted an annual lecture series designed to bring together stakeholders within and outside the broadcasting industry for meaningful and mutually beneficial intellectual interaction,’’ he said.

The director-general said that broadcasting industry had over the years played a pivotal role in the march toward democratic governance by educating, informing and entertaining the populace.

Kawu said that broadcasting served as a formidable link between the government and the governed.

He, however, said that the marriage of democracy and broadcasting had not been without its upheavals.

“This, we hope, will engage our thoughts as we reflect on the commission’s anniversary this year,’’ he said.
