MTN dwarfs competitors in voice subscription

SUN, MARCH 10 2019-theG&BJournal-The latest telecoms data released weekend by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows MTN on top of the numbers in terms of subscription by network in both Q3 and Q4 2018.

MTN, Africa’s telecoms giant, lead Q3 subscription by network with a total of 64,160,404 subscribers and ended Q42018 with 67,133,009 subscribers. The data shows AirTel was competitive in Q32018 with 41,313,633 subscribers while Glo, Nigeria’s biggest indigenous telecoms company followed in close third with 40,856,649. Glo subscribers however surpassed Airtel’s in Q4 with 45,255,297 to  44,180,484.00. EMTS/9MOBILE subscribers grew from 15,355,061 in Q3 to 15,917,015 in Q42018.

In terms of porting activities by network, 1,251 ported in MTN in Q42018 while 1,642 ported out. 665 ported into Glo while 2,146 left the network during the quarter under review. 3,106 left Airtel for better connectivity while only  978 ported in during the period. 5,397 ported into EMTS/9Mobile and 1,191 ported out.

The NBS data shows that for Q3 and Q4 2018 a total of 172,824,239 and 162,032,481 subscribers were active on voice as against 162,522,772 in Q2 2018 which represented 6.66% increase in subscribers base.

Similarly, a total of 112,065,740 and 106,420,858 subscribers were active on internet as against 103,514,997 in Q2 2018 which represented 8.26% growth in subscribers base.

Lagos State has the highest number of subscribers in terms of active voice per State in Q4 2018 and closely followed by Ogun and Kano States respectively while Bayelsa and Ebonyi States have the least number of subscribers. Similarly, Lagos State has the highest number of subscribers in terms of active internet per State in Q4 2018 and closely followed by Ogun and Kano States respectively while Bayelsa and Ebonyi States have the least number of subscribers.

MTN has the highest share of voice subscription and followed by GLO, AIRTEL, EMTS and Others respectively. Similarly, MTN has the highest share of internet subscription and followed by GLO, AIRTEL, EMTS and Others.
