Morocco confirms IMF, World Bank annual meetings will go ahead as planned

THUR, SEPT 14 2023-theGBJournal |The Moroccan Government has confirmed it is proceeding with the IMF and World Bank annual meetings scheduled for October in Marrackech despite the huge earthquake that has left about 2,500 people dead, news agencies quote two sources familiar with the meetings’ preparation.

The devastating earthquake happened near Marrakech where the meetings are planned for October 9th-15.

But the country’s Central Bank Governor Abdellatif Jouahri in a news conference today confirmed to meetings will go ahead as planned.

Jouahri confirmed that high-powered delegates of the World Bank led by Ferid Belhaj, the bank’s Vice President for Middle East and North Africa, had assessed the venue of the meetings in the aftermath of the earthquake and ascertained that it was not only unaffected but it offered a world-class arena conducive for such a global gathering.

About 12, 000 delegates are expected at the event with over 9,000 already accreditations in the bag, and analysts say they expect debt relief, climate change as well as continental free trade will dominate Africa’s conversation at the meetings.

The meetings is returning to Africa 50 years after Kenya hosted in 1973.
