ABUJA, APRIL 19, 2018 – Two members of the House of Representatives from Anambra State, Ben Nwankwo, who represents Orumba South/North Federal Constituency, and Anayo Nnebe of Awka South/ North Federal Constituency, have left the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

Both legislators conveyed their intention to defect to APGA to Yakubu Dogara, the speaker of the House of Representatives, through a letter, citing crisis in the PDP as their reason.

From the letter read on the floor of the House by the speaker, the two lawmakers indicated that they could no longer continue to represent their constituents on the platform of the PDP, which they alleged was factionalised.

They said they have decided to go to the APGA, where they would be more stable to represent their people.

Irked by the announcement, Chukwuka Onyema, the Deputy Minority Leader, told the House that it was rather unfortunate hearing their reasons for defection, informing the House that there was no faction or leadership crisis in the PDP as claimed.

He told the House that the law was clear on the matter of defection, insisting that their movement to APGA must comply with the dictates of the law.

However, the defection came without any controversy and much opposition on the floor, as the argument by the Deputy Minority Leader could not even compel PDP lawmakers in the chamber to debate on the defection.

With this defection, the number of PDP lawmakers and its strength in the House of Representatives has further been depleted.
