SAT, JUNE 01 2019-theG&BJournal-It was a quick start. 27 seconds into the game, a flash pass from the back to Sadio Mane playing wide on the left. He controls beautifully, spotted Mohamed Salah sprinting into the box, Mane flicks the ball forward. It struck Sisossoko innocuously on the upper right hand. Hands were raised by nearly all the men in Liverpool’s red shirt. The referee consults and points to the penalty spot shortly after. Salah steps forward and takes a sublime strike. ONE NILL Liverpool.
The game was over for Spurs in the 87th minute when super sub Divock Origi slotted home the second goal and the winner from a very tight angle to seal the victory for Liverpool and earn them their sixth Champions League trophy.
For Spurs, it was their first appearance in over 35 years and it was a big disappointment. They showed some intensity early on in the second half. But it wasn’t enough. It was good team performance for Liverpool. It wasn’t the greatest game as hugely billed but it produced the result many had anticipated.
Over 100,000 English fans descended on Madrid for the football carnival that reflects the English dominance of the Champions League this season.
Only 17,000 fans from each of the battling clubs have genuine tickets in a stadium that holds 67, 829 but 40,000 more from each side found their way in either by peddling fake tickets, using fake accreditation and imitation devices for ticket checks to gain access to the magnificent stadium. An estimated 60,000 more watched from bars.
It was in the end a massive cash windfall for both teams. Liverpool earned a whopping N29.973 billion (74.35 million Euros) in total for the win while Spurs took home N29.610 billion (73.45 million Euros).
