Gombe State Ministry of Environment and Forestry said on Wednesday that it would view seriously, the killing of any hippopotamus by local hunters in the state.Commissioner in charge of the ministry, Hajiya Sa’adatu Sa’ad, issued the warning at a press conference in Gombe.
She reminded the hunters that Hippopotamus was an endangered animal supported by the world international law of wild life.
“Killing it is against the law, therefore they should desist from such act.
“Instead of killing it, let them just send the animal away from the communities, “she said.
Rampaging hippopotamuses in Malala and Gombe-Abba communities of Dukku Local Government Area of Gombe, had destroyed irrigated farm lands recently.
Recently, a giant hippopotamus that constituted itself to a nuisance in one of the communities in the state, was killed and its remains, shared among the locals.
