Military seizes power in a coup in Guinea-Bissau, President Embalo arrested

THUR NOV 27 2025-theGBJournal| A group of military officers announced late Wednesday they have seized power Guinea-Bissau, and reports say President Umaro Sissoco Embalo has been arrested, a day before the planned announcement of results from a very controversial presidential and legislative election which held on 23rd November, 2025.

The military officers announced on state television that they are suspending the work of all government institutions and electoral bodies, following the announcement of the formation of a ”Supreme Military Command for the Restoration of Order.”

The army officers also announced the closure of the country’s borders and airspace, the imposition of curfew as well as govern until further notice until constitutional order is restored.

The African Union and ECOWAS, in a joint statement on Wednesday night expressed ”deep concern” over the coup announcement.

Ghana Government has equally ”strongly and unequivocally condemned the coup, and said in a statement, that it is an unconstitutional usurpation of authority, which represents a direct assault on democratic governance.
