Market capitalization sheds N846.53 billion w/w as NGX Exchange round off losing week; All-Share Index YTD return falls 200bps to 29.86%

SAT AUG 17 2024-theGBJournal|The Nigerian equities market benchmark index, the All-Share Index (ASI), closed out five-day losing streaks on Friday, falling 1.51% to 97,100.31 with market capitalization nose diving by N846.53 billion w/w to N55.132 trillion. The ASI year-to-date (YTD) return shed 200bps to 29.86%.

All other indices finished lower with the exception of NGX Insurance, NGX Consumer Goods, NGX Oil & Gas, NGX Lotus II and NGX Growth which appreciated by 0.79%, 0.37%, 5.25%, 0.42%, and 6.14% respectively, while the NGX ASeM index closed flat.

Over the course of the week, selloffs in BUACEMENT (-14.82% w/w), OANDO (-11.70% w/w), ZENITHBANK (-2.19% w/w) and TRANSCOHOT (-2.34% w/w) drove the weak performance, outweighing gains in STANBIC (+0.75% w/w), WAPCO (+0.27% w/w) and DANGSUGAR (+10.76% w/w).

In Friday’s trading session, gains in GTCO (+0.99%), ZENITHBANK (+0.40%) and ACCESSCORP (+0.26%) were countered by losses in TRANSCOHOT (-0.93%), FBNH (-0.71%) and UBA (-0.22%). As a result, the market capitalization lost N32.04 million.

A breakdown of the analysis of Friday’s market activities showed trade turnover settled higher relative to the previous session, with the value of transactions up, 111.90%.

A total of 348.95 million shares valued at N7.46 billion were exchanged in 7,677 deals.

GTCO led the volume and value charts with 90.89m units traded in deals worth N4.18 billion.

Trading in the top three equities namely Guaranty Trust Holdings Company Plc, Veritas Kapital Assurance Plc and Japaul Gold & Ventures Plc (measured by volume) accounted for 674.233 million shares worth N16,055 billion in 3,977 deals, contributing 33.16% and 38.08% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.

Market breadth closed positive at a 1.10-to-1 ratio with advancing issues outnumbering declining ones.

OANDO (+9.97%) led twenty-one others on the leader’s log while LEARNAFRICA (-9.97%) topped nineteen others on the laggard’s table.
