TUE, MARCH 24 2020-theG&BJournal- Perhaps Africa’s biggest music export, legendary Cameroonian saxophonist, songwriter and musician Manu Dibango, has died from the deadly coronavirus, according to his family members on his official Facebook page Tuesday.
Dibango, last week was diagnosed with coronavirus (COVID-19) and taken to a hospital in France. He died at 86 years old.
‘’It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Manu Dibango, our pappy groove, who passed away on the 24th who passed away on the 24th of March 2020, further to COVID-19,’’ the statement said.
Manu Dibango is considered the biggest Afro-Jazz saxophonist in the continent and known for his fusion of funk with traditional Cameroonian sounds.
One of his greatest and most memorable hits is SOUL MAKOSA (1972), which sold millions of copies globally, a song referenced by Michael Jackson and Rihanna in their hit songs ‘’Wanna Be Starting Something,’’ and ‘’Please Don’t Stop The Music,’’ respectively.
