SAT JULY 06 2024-theGBJournal| The leaders of Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso have formed what they call an Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a new bloc that effectively ditched their tie with the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS).
The three countries had in January signaled their intention to leave ECOWAS.
The formation of the bloc follows a meeting that began Friday in Niamey, Niger capital with Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso , Abdourahamane Tiani of Niger and Malian leader Assimi Goita present.
The three countries in mid-May agreed on a draft text to create the Alliance which was eventually adopted today.
The Alliance comes after the three countries shifted ties with their former colonial masters, France.
Niger’s ruling General Abdourahamane Tiani had called for a new bloc that will be far removed from the stronghold of foreign powers.
The three countries aim to enhance their collaboration, especially in their joint efforts in fight against regional insecurity which has caused significant disruption and humanitarian crisis across the Sahel region.
