TUE 22 JUNE, 2021-theGBJournal- The Lagos State Government has stated its commitment to partner with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing (FMW&H) for the development of a strategic regional plan for the Southwest Geopolitical region.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, disclosed this, on Monday, while welcoming a team who were on a courtesy visit from the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe, the Commissioner commended the initiative of the Federal Government to pilot the strategic regional development plan with Lagos and Ogun States as the launchpads to kick start the plan in the Southwest, whilst it would thereafter be replicated in other geopolitical regions of the country.

Expressing his enthusiasm about the plan, Salako stated that a strategic regional plan for the two neighbouring States was a good omen which would aid the achievement of the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda and accelerate the development of frontier communities in the State.

For the success of the initiative, he averred that the Lagos State Government is willing and ready to give necessary support and cooperation, especially in the areas of data gathering and information sharing, bearing in mind that Lagos has recorded many success stories in the preparation of development plans.

Earlier, the leader of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing team, Dr. David Olawale, who is a town planner, revealed that the Federal Government had approved the preparation of the Strategic Regional Development Plan for the Southwest with Lagos State as the pilot, while the State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development would play a pivotal role in the process.

He sought effective collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing (FMW&H), particularly in sharing sociological and demographic data.

“Although, out of the six geopolitical zones, only the Southwest has been awarded. The Sub-Region Plans for Southwest and the other five geopolitical zones will usher in the National Physical Development Plan for the good of the country”, he said.
