SAT, 20 AUG, 2022-theGBJournal| Lagos State Government intensified efforts to ensure safety and security of lives and properties in the State amidst real security threats with a swift raid on defiant ‘okada’ (commercial Motorcycle) riders around the Isolo-Ikotun axis and other areas of the metropolis on Friday.
Stern looking members of the Lagos Taskforce charged with enforcing the ban were seen by our reporters clearing, arresting and seizing dozens of riders and their motor cycles.
The exercise which began early morning continued until midday, with the Taskforce peacefully and successfully clearing the riders from the affected points.
The State Government had warned that in exercising the enforcement of the ban, any motorcycle impounded will be impounded and the process made public.
The State Government, had on Thursday, extended the ban on the activities of commercial motorcycles, to four more Local Government Areas (LGAs) and six Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu consequently directed enforcement teams to fully implement the proscription order and bust erring riders across the councils listed in the Okada ban effective from September 1, 2022.
The additional places are Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu and Mushin Local Government Areas. The Development Area Councils are Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Isolo LCDA, Bariga LCDA, and Odi-Olowo LCDA.
The State Government first banned motorcycles on highways and six local governments and nine Local Council Development Areas in June 2022, citing security reasons. Since then, hundreds of motorcycles have been impounded and crushed while the affected areas appears more peaceful with fewer reports of crime and criminal activities.
