FRI NOV 08 2024-theGBJournal| The Lagos State Government is seeking to build a sustainable alternative to the supply of energy from the national grid, as the state faces pressing energy challenges due to its rapid urbanization and growth in economic activities.
In this regard, the state, through its Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and the Office of Public-Private Partnerships (OPPP) has made available four hubs for the establishment of gas-fired power plants that will generate the shortfall in electricity it needs, and is inviting bidders for the establishment of the plants for the state’s electricity market.
The total energy needs of the Lagos, the most populous city in Nigeria and Africa with a population of 20 million, is more than the 6GW of electricity, and what is currently being supplied from the existing electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) is less than 2GW at peak period.
”The plants will be sited near the already existing discos sub-stations in the state,” the State Government said.
The Lagos State Government specify that the minimum intended generation capacity of electricity for each of the four hubs shall be 500MW which one or more power-generating firms shall generate, and the minimum expected generating capacity for participation in any of the four hubs for any firm shall not be less than 100MW.
