WED MAR 11 2026-theGBJournal| The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa has been appointed as the Sub-National Representative on the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) African Region, marking a significant recognition for Lagos within the continental parliamentary community.
The appointment, which runs from 2026 to 2029, was formally conveyed during plenary by the House Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, on Tuesday.
The appointment places the Lagos legislature at the heart of policy dialogue and institutional collaboration among African Commonwealth parliaments.
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is an international organization that brings together parliamentarians from across the Commonwealth to promote democratic governance, parliamentary cooperation, and the strengthening of legislative institutions.
One of its core objectives is to support democratic values, including transparency, accountability, rule of law, and respect for human rights within member legislatures.
Capacity Building for Legislatures.
The association organizes training programs, conferences, workshops, and study visits to strengthen the capacity of parliamentarians and parliamentary staff in legislative drafting, oversight, and public representation.
Parliamentary Diplomacy.
The CPA has branches in over 180 national and sub-national legislatures across the Commonwealth of Nations, including federal, state, and provincial parliaments such as the Lagos State House of Assembly in Nigeria.
The Speaker will commence his tenure by participating in the 90th Executive Committee scheduled to take place in Swakopmund, Namibia.
