WED JULY 03 2024-theGBJournal| Heavy rain fell on Lagos today, causing one of the most devastating floods in the city with major highways and residential estates submerged in waist deep fast flowing floods.
Widescale fatalities has not been reported within city but one report say a primary school pupil was swept away while returning from school in the Ikosi, Ketu area of the Lagos state.
The rain began in early hours on Wednesday morning, intensifying by day break, overwhelming drainages and roadways leaving motorists and workers stranded at home or by the road side.
The rain hit the state hard with Ikorodu, Ibeju Lekki, Surulere, Yaba, Gbagada and even the third mainland bridge flooded. Roofs were blown off in Alimosho area. Shadia Estate in Sholuyi Gbagada was submerged. The Lagos State University (LASU)/Iba-Ojo road was overwhelmed with flood.
Amid the downpour, the EFAG team from the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources were deployed to monitor and clear the flash flood at Olopomeji section of Iyana Oworo.
One commuter who spoke to theG&BJournal described the floods as ”absolute catastrophe”
”As you can see, it is already 12 mid-day, I cannot get to work and I cannot get back to my house. Both directions, the roads are totally, completely flooded, impassable and dangerous to navigate given the deep open gutters along the road. Besides, no vehicle can be seen within 1 kilometer moving,” the commuter said.
