Labour unions suspend strikes over fuel subsidy removal after meeting with FG officials and following intervention of House Speaker, Gbajabiamila

TUE, JUNE 06 2023-theGBJournal |The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have all agreed to suspend the called strikes over fuel subsidy removal announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his inauguration day.

The labour unions met with Federal Government officials Monday following the intervention of Speaker of the Federal House of Representative, Femi Gbajabiamila, and reached a raft of agreements.

Consequently, the NLC agreed the following:

1- The NLC to suspend the notice of strike forthwith to enable further consultations.

2- The NLC and TUC agreed to continue the ongoing engagements with the Federal Government and secure closure on the resolutions above.

3- The Labour Centers and the Federal Government to meet on June 19, 2023, to agree on an implementation framework.

The FG and the labour unions had agreed on a seven point agenda negotiated during the meeting that ended in the early hours of today and resolved to;

(a) establish a joint committee to review the proposal for any wage increase or award and establish a framework and timeline for implementation.

(b) the Federal Government, the TUC and the NLC to review World Bank Financed Cash Transfer Scheme and propose Inclusion of low-income earners in the program.

(c) The Federal Government, TUC and NLC to revive the CNG (compressed natural gas) conversion program earlier agreed with Labour centers in 2021 and work out detailed implementation and timing.

(d) The Labour Centers and the Federal Government to review issues effective delivery in the education sector and propose solutions for implementation.

(e) The Labour Centers and the Federal Government to review and establish the framework for completion and rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries.

(f) The Federal Government to provide a framework for the maintenance of roads and expansion of rail networks across the country, and

(g) All other demands submitted by the TUC to the Federal Government will be assessed by the joint committee.

The resolutions was signed to leaders of the Labour Congress and the TUC, including Festus Osifo, President, TUC Secretary Nuhu Toro, Joseph Ajaero, President NLC, Emmanuel Ugboaja, General Secretary, NLC as well as Ms. Kachollom S. Daju, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.
