Keir Starmer, Labour leader is new UK Prime Minister after a sweeping election victory

…Lizz Truss, the former UK Prime Minister, lost her seat in Parliament, one of the most notable defeats in the election. Former Conservative business secretary, Jacob Rees-Mogg also lost his seat.

…The Labour Party has won 410 seats with the Conservatives slumping to just 119 seats. The centrist Liberal Democrats have taken 71.

FRI JULY 05 2024-theGBJournal| The UK Labour Party, led by Sir Keir Starmer, has won the UK Election with a sweeping victory, dethroning the Conservatives, after 14 years in government.

”The work of change begins today,” Keir Stammer declared after his victory was ascertained. ”To everyone who has campaigned for Labour in this election, to everyone who voted for us and put their trust in our changed Labour Party, thank you.”

Defeated leader of the Conservatives, Rishi Sunak said the British people delivered ”a sobering verdict” while conceding defeat on Thursday night after the votes showed his party has lost huge in the election.

He retains his seat in the Parliament after wining in his constituency, Richmond with narrow margin but will be out of Downing Street within 24 hours and Stammer installed swiftly.

Sunak expressed his gratitude to members of his constituency ”in this difficult night.” while congratulating his opponents ”on the energetic campaigns that they have run.”

He added; ”the Labour Party has won this general election and I have called Keir Stammer to congratulate him on his victory. Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. That is something that will give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future.”

So far Labour Party has won 410 seats with the Conservatives slumping to just 119 seats. The centrist Liberal Democrats have taken 71.

Lizz Truss, the former UK Prime Minister, lost her seat in Parliament, one of the most notable defeats in the election. Former Conservative business secretary, Jacob Rees-Mogg also lost his seat.

In total, eleven notable cabinet ministers lost their seats, including Penny Mordaunt who ran against Rishi Sunak for the party leadership. Jeremy Hunt who serves as chancellor, held on to his seat.

Keir Stammer was renowned barrister and Director of Public Prosecutions between 2008-2013. He became Labour MP in 2015 and was Shadow Brexit Secretary in 2016.

He was elected Leader of Labour Party in April, 2020, following on from Jeremy Corbyn.
