MON, MARCH 09 2020-theG&BJournal- Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Mallam Muhammad Sanusi has been dethroned as the Emir of Kano, following disputes in the Kano State House of Assembly Monday.
The Economist ascended the throne in 2014 following the death of Ado Bayero, his granduncle. He served as the CBN governor from 2009 to 2014 when he was unceremoniously booted out by ex-president Goodluck Jonathan for asking questions around the alleged mysterious disappearance of U.S. $20 billion from NNPC accounts.
A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Usman Alhaji, said the decision to remove Sanusi as Emir was reached in order to safeguard the sanctity, culture, tradition, religion and prestige of the Kano Emirate built over a thousand years.
His removal and immediate removal/dethronement was ‘’unanimously approved.
‘’The removal is made after due consultation with relevant stakeholders and in compliance with part 3 section 13 (a-e) of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019,’’ Usman Alhaji said.
Alhaji in the statement cited many instances Malam Sanusi has been found breaching 3 section 13 (a-e) of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019. A breach he says if left unchecked will destroy the good and established image of the Kano Emirates.
‘’The removal of Emir Sanusi represents the incompatibility of the crown and the conscience,’’ Senator Shehu Musa, human right activist, twitted shortly after the news broke. He added, ‘’the consequences of dissent against established norms and the heavy price of holding principles in our north. It also revealed the intolerance and toxicity of the liquor of power.’’
