MON, MARCH 09 2020-theG&BJournal- The 390 products belonging to 168 sellers of hand sanitizers and face masks, were delisted by Jumia following a warning issued by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection (FCCPC) to sellers engaged in price gouging and arbitrary increases in price of protective and hygiene products in the wake of the outbreak of coronavirus.
The Chairwoman, Nigeria and Head of Institutional Affairs Jumia Group, Juliet C. Anammah communicated the delisting to FCCPC Chief Executive Officer, Babatunde Irukera.
‘’Let me reconfirm that at Jumia we want to work with your agency (FCCPC), most especially at a critical time like this,’’ Anammah told Irukera.
‘’Unfortunately, this is an ongoing process as sellers can relist products. Thus, we will be doing hourly checks and clean up. We are manually selecting now only SKUs with best prices to list,’’ Anammah added.
She said a further communication has been sent to all sellers to notify them that all SKUs with prices seen to be taking advantage of the situation will be delisted. Jumia has also asked the sellers with items delisted to review the prices if they would like to be relisted.
Jumia said it has identified a seller that they can source items from directly to ensure that they relist some of the essential items at better prices.
‘’We have partnered with Reckitt Benckiser across Africa, manufacturers of sanitizers, tto reduce the prices of their products on our sites while we take 0% commission on all their sanitizers sold on our website,’’ Jumia said.
FCCPC issued a release 28 February 2020 to warn on the consequences of price gouging saying that the practice violates Section 17 (s) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA)
