FRI 11 JUNE, 2021-theGBJournal- Italy have beaten Turkey in their opening encounter in the long awaited Euro 2020, scoring three goals for the first time in a Euro’s match on Friday evening at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy.
The tournament is kicking off a year after the tournament was originally scheduled to start before it was shelved because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The return of football fans after over a year of empty stadiums added spice to the opening day of the tournament.
Italy, led by versatile coach Roberto Mancini, is looking to lift the trophy after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Merih Demiral’ own goal in the 53rd minute gave Italy the lead in the really entertaining game. Ciro Imobila’s goal in the 66th minute and Lorenzo Insigne 79th minute strike put Italy in the driving seat in Group A that includes Wales and Switzerland.
Italy played a total of 615 passes, underscoring their dominance. Turkey was billed as the dark horse in the group but failed to live up to the billing as Italy completely dominated in the first half. Thanks to goalkeeper Çakir, Turkey went into half time without conceding.
