SUN APRIL 14 2024-theGBJournal| Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has attacked targets in Israel with over 200 drones and missiles in reaction to what it says is Israel’s regime crimes, including the attack on the consulate section of Iran’s embassy in Damascus.
Reports say overwhelming majority of the missiles where intercepted before entering Israeli airspace, and the US and British air forces participated in neutralizing threats.
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations described the attacks as a ”severe and dangerous escalation,” in a letter addressed to the President of the Security Council calling for a UN Security Council meeting later today.
”The gravity and volume of the attacks are unprecedented, and are a flagrant violation of Israel’s sovereignty of international law, and of Security Council resolutions, the Ambassador said, warning at the same time that ”Iran poses a direct threat to international peace.”
Israel military leaders are discussing counterattack measures with focus on key Iranian army bases and installations.
The Israel Defense Force (IDF) Spokesperson RAdm. Daniel Hagari said ”the IDF is operating at full force to defend the State of Israel—and the people of Israel. This is a mission that we are determined and ready to fulfill.”
Over the weekend, the IDF Chief of the General Staff, LTG Herzi Halevi, and CENTCOM Commander, General Michael Erik Kurilla, had completed a comprehensive situational assessment with IDF officials on the IDF’s readiness for defensive and offensive operations in all scenarios.
Egypt, close neighbour to both countries has expressed its deep concern, calling for the exercise of the utmost restraint to spare the region.
UK prime minister Rishi Sunak condemned the attacks in a statement saying the attacks risk inflaming tensions and destabilizing the region.
He vowed UK’s support for Israel saying the ”UK will continue to stand up for Israel’s security and that of all our regional partners, including Jordan and Iraq.”
