MON, FEBRUARY 04 2019-theG&BJournal-The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has intensified efforts nationwide on voter education that shines light on voters behaviour on Election day and penalties of vote buying. Its officials are on a nationwide tour taking their message of peace and orderliness to churches and mosques as well.
The voter education initiative is the latest large-scale initiative by INEC who seeks to conduct the fairest election in the country amidst doubts by its critics.
The Independent Electoral body set up in 1998 will be at the centre of the storm from 16 February 2019 when it conducts general election.
Yesterday, (Sunday 3 Feb 2019) INEC’s Director Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Oluwole Osaze Uzzi was in different churches in Abuja where he spoke on how to vote on election day and the penalties of vote buying. He spoke to the congregation at the Inspirational Life Community Church (ILCC) and the Redeem Evangelical Mission (TREM).
His counterpart in Kwara State, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mal. Garba Attahiru Madami, visited two churches, St Mary Catholic Church and Bishop Smith Memorial Anglican Church in Ilorin, Kwara State where he delivered similar messages.
INEC said the goal of the initiative is to make possible successful conduct of the general election, prevent violence and drive inclusive participation in the electoral process.
According to INEC’s consolidated number of registered voters, 51.11% of voters are youths between the ages of 18 and 35. 22.97% are middle-age voters between the ages 36 and 50 while 15.22% are elderly voters between the ages of 51 and 70 and another 3.69% are old and above 70 years.
