INEC inaugurates National situation room and collation center for the 2023 general elections

FRI. 06 JANUARY, 2023-theGBJournal| As general elections approach, the INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION, (INEC) Thursday announced the inaguration of National situational room and collation for the 2023 general election.

The Commission announced the inauguration of situation room and collation centre, where the results of Presidential elections will be collated, after its regular weekly meeting where it also deliberated on several issues, including the venue for the National Situation Room and Collation Centre for the 2023 General Election.

The Commission also established two committees for this purpose.

First is the Collation Secretariat, where Presidential results from the States will be collated.

This will be headed by the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, ”in exercising his constitutional responsibilities as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation and Returning Officer for the Presidential election,” INEC said.

”In addition, a few technical staff will assist him,” the Commission said.

The second is the Situation Room and Collation Centre Committee, which shall be responsible for the preparation of the venue, seating arrangement, utilities and services, security, the accreditation of party agents, as well as the national and international observers, media, etc.

The Committee which is to be chaired by Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, National Commissioner, has sixteen members. Other members of the Committee are Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, National Commissioner, Barr. Festus Okoye, National Commissioner, Director, Electoral Operations, Director, ICT, Director, Planning and Monitoring and Director, Security.

Othe member of the committee include Director, Election & Party Monitoring , Director, International Cooperation & Protocol, Director, Research, Director, Health Services, Director, Estate, Works and Transport, Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman as well as Special Adviser to the Chairman, Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman and Director, Commission Secretariat who is a Member/Secretary of the Committee.

The Situation Room and Collation Centre Committee was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who charged it to commence work in earnest and to discharge its responsibilities diligently.

Meanwhile, in recognition of the INEC Policy Framework on Access and Participation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), REC Niger State ALH AHMED YASHA’U GARKI and some management staff of the Commission supervised the collection of PVCs at the Leprosy Colony of Chanchaga Leprosarium in Paikoro LGA ahead of the 2023 general election.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, today also led a delegation to the National Youth Service Corps headquarters, Abuja on a courtesy visit. The Acting Director General, NYSC, Mrs Christy Uba, and her management team received the delegation.

In his remarks, Prof Yakubu described corps members as “the most reliable, patriotic, educated and the largest election duty staff” in Nigeria.

He pledged that INEC would continue to place premium on their security and provide insurance cover for emergencies.
