Indigenous telecoms firm, Mafab and MTN emerge winners of bid to deploy 5G network in Nigeria

TUE 14 DEC, 2021-theGBJournal- Mafab Nigeria Communications Limited, an indigenous telecoms player led by Alhaji Musibau Bashiru and MTN Nigeria, Monday emerged winners of the bid set up by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to deploy the 5G network in Nigeria.

Both companies will pay $273.6 million each for the two available Lots of 100 MHz TDD slots of 3.5 GHz band for the deployment of the deployment of fifth-generation network in the country.

MTN Nigeria however, opted to pay additional $15,9 million to be assigned the preferred Lot one, while Mafab was assigned the Lot two, at no extra cost to bring the total to be paid by both firms to $547 million.

The bidding process began at $199.37 million, as against the reserved price of $197.4 million set by the NCC.

Airtel Networks Limited, the other network in the biddings, dropped out of the bidding process until the last round.

Mafab Nigeria Communications Limited, a new entrant into the Nigerian telecoms market was licensed in July 2020. It holds an international data access license from the NCC.
