TUE, OCT 13 2020-theG&BJournal-The Inspector General of Police statement on the formation of the new Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, simply announced that the team will fill the gaps arising from dissolution of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The statement reads: Prospective members of this new team will undergo psychological and medical examination to ascertain their fitness and eligibility for the new assignment. They are to commence training at the different Police tactical institutions nationwide, next week.
The IGP identified the location for their training to include the Counter-Terrorism College, Nonwai-Tai, Rivers State, Police Mobile Force Training College, Ende, Nasarawa State and Police Mobile Force Training College, Illa-Orangun, Osun State, respectively.
‘’Simply put, the IGP has simply changed the name from SARS to SWAT,’’ one observer to the #ENDSARS protests in the country told theGBJournal in Lagos. ‘’The statement is not and will not be enough to reassure anybody.’’
Some other observers our reporters spoke to expressed similar sentiment and wondered whether the change is part of the promised reform.
Meanwhile, the IGP has ordered all personnel of the defunct SARS to report at the Force Headquarters, Abuja for debriefing, psychological and medical examination.
