SAT FEB 14 2026-theGBJournal| A fresh political storm is brewing ahead of the 2027 general elections as the House of Representatives moves to challenge the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Reps have called for an emergency to review matters arising from the announcement of the 2027 General Election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

They are questioning the timing and framework of the proposed schedule, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown that could reshape preparations for Nigeria’s next national vote.

”The emergency sitting reflects the resolve of the House to respond promptly to issues with far-reaching implications for the nation’s democratic process. Deliberations will focus on relevant legislative matters connected to the announcement, in line with the constitutional responsibilities of the National Assembly,” House of Representative said in a statement released late Friday by the Office of the Speaker through its spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi.

The House of Reps statement also drew attention to the constitutional and national significance of the development and the need for timely legislative consideration.

The emergency sitting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, 2026, and Members have been strongly advised to prioritise attendance, given the importance of the issues under consideration.

With tensions rising and legal interpretations clashing, the dispute signals an early and potentially defining battle in the road to 2027.
