FRI JAN 17 2025-theGBJournal| The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has applauded the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for its unwavering commitment to academic excellence and societal transformation.

He gave the commendation during the University’s 55th Convocation Ceremony held at the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium, Akoka.

Addressing the graduating students, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged them to adopt innovation, resilience, and integrity as guiding principles in their pursuit of success.

He emphasised that despite Nigeria’s current economic challenges, the nation remains a land of limitless opportunities. He encouraged the graduands to rise as change-makers and problem-solvers, leveraging their skills to make impactful contributions.

Acknowledging the trend of youth migration, the Governor challenged the graduates to focus on harnessing local opportunities and designing solutions to address Nigeria’s unique challenges.

“Do not be discouraged by the economic hurdles. These are global phenomena. You have the unique privilege and responsibility to create impactful solutions that will shape the future of our nation”, he said.

The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin highlighted UNILAG’s role as a beacon of hope and a hub of innovation and leadership. He lauded the institution for producing world-class leaders, professionals, and innovators whose contributions have positively influenced society.

The Governor also celebrated the achievements of Lagos State indigenes, particularly Dr. Adetoun Alaba Akintoye, this year’s valedictorian and Best Graduating Ph.D. Student. He described her groundbreaking research in food security as exemplary and a testament to the brilliance and resilience of Nigerian scholars. He added that Akintoye’s success reflects the incredible talent and potential of Lagosians as a people.

The Visitor to the University, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, also urged the graduands to be fearless and to utilise their acquired skills to drive innovation and foster national development. He emphasised the importance of becoming job creators rather than solely job seekers.

The ceremony’s highlight included the presentation of certificates to outstanding students, the conferment of doctoral degrees, and the awarding of Emeriti Professorships to distinguished Nigerians for their exceptional contributions to national development.

Among them were the Group Managing Director of Sahara and Mr. Fola Adeola, the co-founder of Guaranty Trust Holding Company.
